Sacramento River Striper

Fresh Klamath River Springer

Date:  April 13th                                                                                                         Current report:  Sacramento River Stripers & Klamath Springers

I can't hardly believe it but my 28th birthday is on Friday.  It seems like yesterday when I hooked that 1st chrome summer steelhead on the Deschutes 13 years ago.  I'll be looking to create some more magical memories at the end of the week on the Sacramento River for stripers.  The Klamath River has already produced a few springers for some very lucky anglers.  These are a very special strain of fish on the river.  The fighting capabilities of these fish and  their quality of meat are unsurpassed on California rivers.  Look for this fishery to really take off in 2-3 weeks.  As an added note the Klamath River will be the only show in California as far as Salmon fishing goes this year so I would highly recommend booking your guide for fall salmon fishing in a hurry.  The unnofficial word as of now is that the Klamath should see a large run of four year old fish and have a sport fishing quota of 22,000 chinook.  That's a lot of fish!  Do yourself a favor and secure yourself a good date with a good guide and make sure your accommodations are taken care of early if you want to stay in Klamath!   And also remember that many Sacramento River guides that are not familiar with the Klamath will be moving their operation to the Klamath since they will be shut down.????????!!!!!!!!!!!!  Do yourself a favor and go with someone that legitimately and intimately knows the river.  Since I was a kid I have logged in excess of 1000 long days of prime time fishing on the Klamath.  I've pridefully considered the Klamath River my home water since I moved to the area when I was 18 years old with the sole purpose of being closer to the Klamath and its steelhead.  Since I got my powerboat in 2004 I've literally lived on the river during fishing season. I can assure you that I know the river from top to bottom, every rock, and most importantly all the places that the fish live.  If you want to fish the Klamath River with a serious guide that has real passion for this river give me a call.  I already know where my ashes will be spread on the Klamath.  Let me take you there and you'll understand why.

Screamin' reels forever, Gary

Date:  March 23rd-April 3rd:                                                                                     Current report:  Epic fishing to close the season!

Fishing finally turned around and was awesome at the end of the season.  For the most part I was fun fishing with family & friends on the upper Chetco and it was killer.  I've also continued fishing into April and I found a pile of chrome steelhead.  If you want to catch these fish don't delay because they won't be around for very long.  Thanks, Gary Hix

Scott Gray sporting a beautiful Eel River hen, March 22nd

Date:  March 17th-22nd;  Current Report:  Eel River and options for extending your steelhead season into April

Today I struggled to catch fish.  The section of river that has given me the best results this year is ultra low and clear and its probably a major challenge just to get a drift boat down it.  Today I had to adapt to a different piece of river that I haven't fished all year long.  The color was near perfect however it seemed too big and pushy.  When the river drops all of the runs become well defined and just plain fish better.  The river will be getting into better and better shape throughout the rest of the season.  And for all of you doubters, I've had some phenomenal steelhead fishing in April.  I keep a tight lip on where I'll be fishing since I have it virtually all to myself.  If this sounds appealing to you give me a call.  I also have the 29th, 30th and 31st open if anyone is still itchin' to catch steelies.

Current Report:  Washington trip, Smith river , Eel River, Trinity River, Klamath River

Washington is a steelhead paradise.  There are a bunch of great rivers very close to each other that all hold monster steelhead.  It looks like I am going to be going straight back up to get another chance at the fish of a lifetime.  Today I spoke with my guide friends and from what I hear the eel is still fishing good.  The Smith surprisingly is kicking out a few fish ever since the Raider derby.  The Trinity is also still fishing and look for the Klamath to be a good place to fish in the near future.

Thanks,

Gary Hix

Dan and Joe Hager with Dan's 1st steelhead

Date:  March 5th-7th                                                                                                      Current Report:  Trinity, Smith, Eel

Yesterday I fished the Trinity with Dan and Joe Hager. When I spoke with Joe I told him that I have been doing well on the Eel and I told him that is where we would be fishing.  Unfortunately he told me that keeping fish was the priority for the trip.  Given that we ruled out the Smith due to poor fishing and went to the Trinity which was marginal due to very high water.  However we were able to hook six fish including one nice bright hatchery keeper that put a big smile on Dan's face.  I will be heading to Forks, Washington for monster later winter run steelhead all next week.  When I get back I'll be sure to show off some of the fish.  When I get back I still have some openings available and if it doesn't rain I'm sure that I'll be on some good fishing the rest of the season if it doesn't rain too much.  Call now to set up your trip (707)954-1004.

Thanks,

Wow!

Date: March 2nd -4th                                                                                                    Current Report:  Eel River

The last three days have been awesome.  On Sunday we went 3 for 4 and had a couple other really good grabs. The water just didn't seem quite right but Jaime did catch his 1st steelie!  The other boat I had working got 11 and 15 pound chromers.  On Monday I did a different drift and we found the fish right off the bat.  We had ten before noon and missed many others.  It was every pass for the whole morning.  However that was it. If were able to stay on the fish all day we could have had a truly unbelievable day but we had a lot of river to go.  Today I didn't have a trip and the I went bank fishing in the evening and caught a big chrome buck I estimated at 18 pounds.  The last 3 days I have been seeing a lot of fresh fish which is a great sign for the rest of the season.  If anyone is interested in getting in on this great fishing I still have plenty of dates available after March 16th.  Call now to set up your trip 707 954-1004.

Thanks,

Gary Hix

Jaime's 1st steelie!

Matt's 2nd steelie!

Date:  Saturday March 1st                                                                          Current Report:  Eel River

Today I was on the Eel with Matt and Jaime and we ended going 2 for 3.  I also had another boat working for me that got 3 as well.  Every fish that I heard of today were downstreamers but they were fun catchin'.   I thought we were in for a great day when Matt caught 2 in 2 casts in our 2nd spot.  We didn't get another one until about 10 am and that was it.  We pulled out and tried a different stretch of river that didn't have as much boat pressure but we couldn't find fish.  I told my guys that tomorrow we can't afford to be late again because there was about 15 boats on the same water and we had way too much competition.  I'm looking forward to fishing tomorrow now that Matt and Jaime have the hang of things, not to mention that I still need to put Jaime on a fish.

Date:  Thursday  February 28 2008                                                                       Current Report:  Winter steelhead season rundown

This season has been by far and away the toughest steelhead fishing that I've ever seen.  Particularly the Smith River has been brutal.  Last year I had a day where I hooked 15 chrome bright Smith fish in one day.  This year it took me a couple weeks to find my first 15 hookups.  The Chetco overall fished better than the Smith but it has been poor considering what is caught there most years.  The highlight of my winter steelhead season this year was the week I spent on the Eel River before and during President's day weekend.  My best day we hooked 13 fish.  However the fishing pressure quickly got out of hand and our scores plummeted to 1-4 fish per day.  Right now I'm packing up and heading back down to the Eel.  I predict that the fishing should be really good at least for a week or so because it is just barely coming into shape.  I still have Monday and Tuesday(3rd and 4th) open if anyone is interested.  Finally I would like to apologize for not keeping up on my reports.  This has been such a tough season for me taking on Tim King's business because the fishing hasn't been even close to what I'm accustomed to.  I thought it would be easy coming home to write about the great fishing that I've had every day, but the numbers never materialized.  I kept trying to put off my report until I had some banner days thinking that was best but fishing never got good and I just kept procrastinating.  Believe me it feels good to finally write a report and get the ball rolling again.  Now I realize that I'm better off consistently writing a report no matter what the fishing is like.  At least people will recognize that I'm still fishing and will be able to get an honest report whether it be good, bad, or ugly.  So from now on I'll be doing my best to let you know on a consistent basis how many fish I'm catching- so be sure to stay tuned.  Call now to set up your trip 707 954 1004.  Once again I still have March 3rd and 4th open which should be prime time on the Eel.

Thanks,

Gary Hix

Current Report:  Klamath

Today I fished again with Steve and Gina and it was awesome.  We didn't find a bunch of fish right off the bat but we got into a run upriver that was loaded.  We had a bunch of doubles and even a triple.  We ended up hooking around 20 fish, many of them still had sea lice and they are spunky.  It's great to be in the fish.  Call now to set up your trip  (707)954-1004.  Thanks, Gary Hix-  King's Guide Service

Date:  Thursday  October 4  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

Yesterday morning the mouth of the Klamath blew out and within a few hours thousands of fish poured into the lower river.  I went fishing with a buddy in the evening and we had fish rolling around us everywhere nonstop.  We ended up hooking around 30 fish in just a few hours.  Today I fished with Steve Lira and his wife Gina from Gilroy and we killed 'em.  It seemed like they both had fish on every drift for hours this morning.  I honestly lost track of how many we hooked but it had to have been close to 30.  This is by far the best fishing we've seen this year.  I still have some open dates coming up and the fishing is hot.  Call now to set up your trip  (707)954-1004.  Thanks, Gary Hix-  King's Guide Service

Date:  Monday  October 1  2007
Current Report:  Klamath,  Trinity

Once again I apologize for not posting reports and I appreciate everyone's concern but I am doing fine.  Here's the rundown on the fishing.  Fishing finally got pretty good on the 26th and has stayed consistent since then.  On the days that I've fished we've been hooking between 8 to 15 fish.  Most of the fish have been cookie cutters in the 10lb. range but we have have gotten a few over 20 lbs.  Last night I heard that the fish are spread out through the Trinity and that fishing has been good.  Call now to set up your trip  (707)954-1004.  Thanks, Gary Hix-  King's Guide Service

Date:  Thursday  Setember 13  2007
Current Report:  Klamath.

I apologize for not posting reports but the fishing was so poor for a long stretch that I had nothing good to say.  Finally the fish are coming full force.  The last two days there have been salmon coming into the lower river in big numbers.  It went from working hard all day to hook a few fish to getting limits overnight.  The fishing should be really good from here on out.  Call now to set up your trip (707)954-1004.  Thanks, Gary Hix -King's Guide Service

Date:  Thursday  August 30  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

I fished on Tuesday with a group of two from Santa Barbara and the fishing was downright poor.  All that we were able to find was about 10 half pounders.  It was very discouraging to not be able to produce some nice adult fish for my customers.  However, the guides have all been struggling this week.  The good news is that our water finally made it down here yesterday.  I'm expecting to see some good fishing when this water settles down this weekend.  I also got cancelled on for the 1st and 2nd if anyone is interested in fishing.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip (707)945-1004.  Thanks, Gary Hix -  King's Guide Service

Date:  Saturday  August 25  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

I've been fishing the last two days with a group of four from Tuolumne.  I thought that we did well for the conditions on Friday.  We ended up hooking around 15 adult steelhead and a bunch of half pounders.  Today ended being a whole lot tougher.  We fished a half day and hooked four nice steelhead.  The river was really crowded today and it seemed like there was someone in every spot that I wanted to fish.  I'm not sure if they just weren't biting good today but I really think that the pressure on the fish had a lot to do with it.  Once our water gets here there will be plenty of fish to handle the pressure.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip (707) 954-1004.  Thanks, Gary Hix - Kings Guide Service

Date:  Thursday  August 23  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

Today I was on the water with Clay and his son Elliot from the bay area.  The morning bite was on and we hooked 4 adult steelhead and a bunch of half pounders at our first stop.  The rest of the day got tough as we ran way upriver and were only able to pick away at four more adult steelhead.  I just heard the water release on the Trinity is going to happen Saturday  and the water should reach the Lower Klamath by Monday.  Be prepared for some amazing fishing once we get the water.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip.  Thanks Kings Guide Service

Date:  Saturday  August 18  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

Well it proved to be tough fishing for us on Thursday.  We didn't put until after the other guides and it felt like all the good water was kind of pounded.  Anyways we fished hard for four nice adult steelhead.  Friday was a complete turnaround.  I fished a group of three from Southern Cal and our first 12 drifts of the day we hooked up every time.  We ended up hooking over 15 adult steelhead 1 adult salmon and a bunch of half pounders.  Next week the fishing should only improve. Call now to set up your Klamath trip.  Thanks Kings Guide Service.

Date:  Wednesday  August 15  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

Fishing on the Klamath has been a little tougher the past couple days.  There has been considerably more fishing pressure and the fish have just seemed a little bit more wise to the game.  On Tuesday I had two anglers and we hooked seven adult steelhead and maybe 10 half pounders.  Today I just fished the evening with my brother and his wife for a few hours in the evening and we hooked five nice adult steelhead.  We'll be back at it in the morning the morning and I'm expecting to have better fishing.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip.  Thanks Kings guide service.

Date:  Monday  August 13  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

Fishing was good on the Klamath at the end of last week.  On Thursday I had a group of three and we hooked over 20 adult steelhead and one nice salmon about 25 pounds.  I heard that fishing over the weekend was excellent as well.  This week looks like it could be a good one.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip.  Thanks Kings Guide Service.

Date:  Tuesday  August 7  2007
Current Report:  Klamath

Fishing on the Klamath has been pretty slow the past week with the warm water temperatures staying above seventy degrees.  What we need is for the weather to cool off inland to get our water to get back down in the sixties.  When this happens the steelhead fishing will take off.  Usually the second week of August is really good steelhead fishing.  I'll be fishing the river later this week and I'm hoping to have some good fish stories to tell.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip.  Thanks Kings Guide Service.

Date:  Thursday  July 26  2007
Current Report:   Sacramento Trinity Klamath

The salmon fishing on the Sacramento on the opener was mediocre but the trout fishing remains good.  On the Trinity the salmon fishing has really slowed down and the run seems to be just about done.  With the rain last week the Klamath cooled down to 68 degrees and triggered the steelhead to move upriver.  Fishing for steelhead has been pretty good for anglers using bait, hardware, and flies.  Call now to set up your Klamath trip, the fishing is already heating up.  Thanks Kings Guide Service
