Latest news from the rivers!

Date: Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at 09:12:20
Current Report:

Another storm came through last night on the north coast. The Mad and the Eel are out for a while. The rivers have been near flood stage. The fishing on the Trinity remained excellent yesterday even though the flows were still high but the river was dropping fast. We have only been able to fish the areas above Douglas City where highway 299 crosses the river. Below that it has been blown out. The storm last night dropped about a foot of snow (see picture below) from Junction City up to Buckhorn summit this won’t affect the river as much as the runoff is very slow. The Klamath is out also but it will come back in after a couple of days. Look for it to be fishable above the I -5 Bridge soon. Although the Smith has been at 15 feet at the bridge it’s still a little high but will be fishable soon. For those of you planning your steelhead trips it’s always tough to try and figure out the weather and river situations. If the rivers are in or are close to being in go fishing and bring the rain gear. If they are blown out wait for them to drop into fishable conditions and then head out. The bite will be on. We will be fishing the Trinity and the Smith the next couple of days .We have been working on a new project on the web if you want a sneak preview go to www.trinityriverfishing.com  Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The Trinity and the Smith are dropping fast. The storm dumped lots of rain and snow at the higher elevations looks like were off to a great start for a wet year. The Smith and the Trinity may be fishable tomorrow on the upper runs. Were hoping to hit the water tomorrow if the weather holds. The other North Coast Rivers will take a while to clear out to fishable conditions. We will keep you up to date when things change. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The north coast and the interior mountains are being hit with another big winter storm. The Trinity, Smith, Klamath, Mad, Redwood creek, Eel, and all other coastal rivers are blown out. Look for the Smith and the upper Trinity to be the first to clear after the storm passes through. The Steelhead action should be hot when we get fishable conditions. I will keep you updated on the conditions as soon as things change. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

Just a quick up date on some of the North Coast rivers .The weather pattern looks good for fishing for the next 10 days with only scattered showers in the forecast. If this holds true look for some of the blown out rivers to become fishable. The Smith has been giving up a few steelies. It is a very promising start for this early in the season. The Trinity is still fishing well in the upper sections. We haven’t been on the water much this week as every body is busy with Christmas we did do a few trips and landed 4 on one and 5 on the other. The big fish for the week was a 9lbs wild buck. The fishing will continue to be good in to march. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

Tough day on the Trinity. There were a few guides out on the river today getting in some fishing between storms. We had been fishing low and clear conditions for the most part since the steelhead season started. We had about 3 feet of visibility in the water today. We all thought it would be great for pulling plugs. Things got off to a really slow start we didn’t even have a take down by 11 o’clock .Things picked up around noon we landed a half pounder on some roe .Then we boated a German brown too. Around 1 o’clock we ran it some nice steelies side drifting roe we able to put four in the boat the largest was about 8lbs you never know how the day will turn out. More stormy weather is moving into the north coast this will keep the fish moving up river. We fished the area around Douglas city today as it is one of the first areas to clear after a storm .We will keep you posted on how things are fishing. The Smith gave up some nice steelhead and salmon today for the guides over there the rest of the rivers are still to high and muddy to fish. The fishing should be great after the next storm passes through. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The Smith is in and the Trinity is in above Weaver creek right where highway 299 crosses the river in Douglas City. There is more rain and snow forecast for the end of the week. There are a few lucky fishermen who will be testing the waters between the storms. We will be out Wednesday and try to get in a full day on Thursday. Kevin from Mad River Outfitters was headed over to the Smith to try and land a few salmon before the next storm. We will update how the fishing is tomorrow or Thursday. Thanks Tim King

Date: Monday, December 16, 2002 at 19:48:46
Current Report:

The North Coast Rivers are still blown out. We really had a nice storm move through the region that dumped lots of rain and snow at the higher elevations, The Smith will be the first to clear looks like it will be fishable by Wednesday if we don’t get to much more rain .The upper Trinity will follow and should be fishable in a couple of days. The Mad usually runs dirty most of the winter season so it will be good as soon as the flows drop to a reasonable level. The Eel may take a week to clear this river is slow to come back into shape and it is really blown out .The upper Klamath will be back in shape also in a few days depending on how much rain falls and how much snow melts around Yreka and the Hornbrook area. We will keep you up to date on the latest information. Thanks Tim King

Date: Friday, December 13, 2002 at 20:07:14
Current Report:

The North Coast Rivers are all blown out as a severe winter storm is pounding the coast and the mountain ranges. The rivers are all open to fishing and the action should be good as soon as they start to drop in the next few days .We will be heading over to the Eel after Christmas. Hopefully the run will start early as some of the other north coast rivers have this season. The Trinity was blown out below Weaverville today. We fished up by Lewiston but had no luck. Things should settle down in a few days. Thanks Tim King

Date: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at 20:08:48
Current Report:

Just quick update on the North Coast Rivers. The smith is open and the Eel is open up to the south fork. It has been raining on and off the last couple of days most of the rain has been up on the California and Oregon border. The rain is supposed to get heavy on Saturday which will open all the rivers. It may take a couple of days for some of the rivers to drop back in to shape. Hopefully the Smith will see some early arriving steelhead as most of the other rivers have this season. The mad will be a good bet after they open it. The Trinity is still in great shape and is loaded with steelhead the Klamath is fishing good also. Thanks Tim King

Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at 19:05:26
Current Report:

Another great day of fishing on the Trinity River. We have been fishing lots of different areas and finding good success in most of them. The upper river is mostly fish in the 6 to 12 lbs range we have been landing any where from 4 to 7 fish on the upper runs. The lower river is full of fish to we have been doing great down there. We have been landing on average around 25 fish on these trips. The fish in the lower river are fresh from the ocean and just a blast to land there are fish in the 2 lbs range all the way up to 14 lbs. We have been catching on average 3 to 4 fish in the 7 to 9 lbs range and 3 to 4 fish in the 3 to 5 lbs range with the rest being made up of half pounders. We really need more rain for the north Coast Rivers. It was raining on us most of the day but a gully washer is what is needed to really break things open. More rain is forecast for the end of the week hopefully it pours. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The fishing on the Trinity is fantastic. We landed 8 steelhead in the 6 to 7 lbs range with lots of half pounders being caught also .Rain is forecast for the coming week this should really help out some of the coast rivers the Mad Eel and the Smith. Look for lots of salmon to be caught on the smith if we get enough rain to lift the low flow closures. The Mad will definitely be a good bet for steelhead after they lift the low flow closures. The Eel usually starts to see some steelhead action in December we will just have to wait and see. The Klamath is still fishing well for steelhead in the areas above Happy Camp for fish in the 3 to 4 lbs range. Thanks Tim King

Date: Friday, December 6, 2002 at 21:34:11
Current Report:

We were fly fishing today. There is lots of steelhead in the river with some really good sized fish. The low and clear conditions make for some tough fishing we had an off day as we only hooked in to 3 nice fish but were only able to get only one to the boat. It was a nice wild buck in the 9lbs range. We had a few more take downs on the flys but they didn’t hook up. There was a few other boats on the river and they were doing ok we saw some really nice fish being hooked. The fishing is still good and there are lots of nice steelies in the river. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

It looks like the storm door may be starting to open. We got a little rain today but not enough to help out the rivers. The Mad Eel and the Smith have closures due to the low flows .When the rain does come these rivers should be full of fish. The Klamath is still fishing great with lots of hookups and fish landed. The fish are in the 4 to 7lbs range. The Trinity is still low and clear making for some tough fishing conditions. Now that the Thanksgiving holidays are over there are not as many people on the river. We have been moving around to different parts of the river and have had pretty good success. The fish have been mostly hatchery fish in the 6 to 10lbs range we are starting to catch some wild fish in the lower portions of the river below the south fork. The fishing is still good and is improving with the less pressure. There is more rain forecast this week that will really get things moving. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The fishing is good on the Trinity. There are a lot of people fishing from the bank and in boats .We had a good day landing 7 out of 10. The biggest was about 9lbs.The water is still low and clear with no rain in sight .We have been able to put all our clients in to fish even in these tough conditions. The Klamath is wide open around Happy Camp with boats landing up to 20 Steelies a day in the 3 to 4 lbs range. The Smith is still giving up some monster salmon down in the estuary. They are experiencing the same conditions we are, low and clear. The top guides are still doing ok putting fish in the boat. We haven’t heard of much action coming out of the Eel or the Mad as they are subject to the low flow closures. The estuaries are still open. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

Were taking a couple of days off for Thanksgiving hope everyone has a great day .Just a quick up date on the rivers. The mad is closed but there are a ton of fish waiting to come up the estuary is opened for fishing if you just can’t wait. The Klamath has lots of Steelhead the best fishing is above Happy camp up to the I 5 bridge the fish are averaging around 3 to 4 lbs. The Eel is closed we should start to see some Steelhead in early December if we get enough rain. The Trinity is fishing good but were having to deal with low and clear conditions the fish are averaging between 5 and 12lbs. The Smith is giving up some ,monster salmon in the estuary this river will break wide open after the next significant rain storm. This year has been a great Salmon season with the rivers seeing really big fish and large returns. The Steelhead season is just underway on some rivers and will be starting soon on others don’t miss out on these great opportunities. We will resume fishing on Friday. Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The Trinity is gin clear and the fish are being spooked very easily. Same old story we need more rain .We were able to hook in to 6 steelies today and we lost a monster that swam down and around a log. We are still seeing lots of fish and it will only get better when the rains come. Thanks Tim King

Date: Monday, November 25, 2002 at 20:44:46
Current Report:

A 13lbs 9 ounce Steelie came out of the trinity in the last couple of days . There are people catching huge fish all over the river .Some body will probably top the 20lb mark this year. You can take a drive up to the hatchery and see the monster fish waiting to enter the fish ladders. We still need more rain to really open things up. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

WOW we had a great day on the Trinity today. There are tons of fish in the river even in the low clear water we were able to land 5 nice steelies. We only saw one other boat all day and they were hooking fish too. We also floated by a big party of fly guys fishing from the bank they had a great day also .We really need some rain to keep things going .Thanks Tim King

Date: Saturday, November 23, 2002 at 21:02:36
Current Report:

We need more rain to get things going on the north Coast Rivers. The Trinity is giving up some quality steelhead but not quantities of them. The size of the fish remains much larger than in previous years. The fish are averaging around 7lbs and are going up to 15 lbs. The Klamath is giving up more fish but they are much smaller in size. The rest of the north Coast Rivers are closed due to low flows. When the rains come all the rivers should be in much better conditions to catch more fish. Thanks Tim King

Date: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at 18:50:35
Current Report:

The Trinity River is full of Steelhead most of the fish have moved in to the upper river above Junction City. The river is low and clear making for some challenging fishing conditions. We have been catching good numbers of fish on most of our trips. The key is down sizing your presentations as not to spook the fish .The fly fishing has been really good in these conditions and so has pulling small plugs or using small pieces of roe .The size of the fish this year are really big compared to last years run. Fish up to 15lbs are being caught and we expect bigger ones later in the year. We need more rain to help keep the fish moving. Most of the coast rivers are closed due to low flows. The Mad will be a good bet after the next storm for Steelhead and the Smith or Chetco for salmon. The Eel will start to have good numbers of Steelhead sometime in December check back for updates on this river as we will be headed that way soon .Thanks Tim King

Date: Friday, November 15, 2002 at 18:51:39
Current Report:

The Steelhead fishing on the Trinity remains very good with good numbers of fish spread out through the whole river system. We have been fishing a lot of different areas and have been catching fish on all the runs. We did catch two Coho salmon this week up to 18 lbs these fish have to be released we also caught one nice king and a German brown while pulling plugs for steelhead. The Mad River will remain open through Monday along with the Smith and the Eel. The Mad is fishing really well for Steelhead and the Smith and Chetco are doing well for salmon. Please call before heading to these rivers as they are subject to the low flow restrictions. The number to call is 707 442 4502 The Klamath is kicking out good numbers of Steelhead up above Happy Camp to the Iron Gate reservoir .Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

We fished the Mad River today and the Trinity yesterday. he Mad is loaded with steelhead and a few salmon mixed in almost every one had fish The mad is subject to low flow restrictions so be sure and call before you go. The Trinity is giving up a lot of steelhead . The river is in great shape from Lewiston all the way to Weitchipeck. The weather has been mild all week and has really help out the fishing .This first storm we had got things going on all the north coast rivers .The Smith and Chetco are having a great start to the salmon season with the steelhead soon to follow. Your best bet for steelhead is the Trinity as the Mad will probable close due to low water till the next storm. For salmon head up the coast to the Smith or Chetco and the Klamath always has lots of half pounders .Thanks Tim King

Date: Monday, November 11, 2002 at 19:59:32
Current Report:

We had a great day of Steelhead fishing today on the Trinity .The weather was perfect and about 50 degrees .We pulled plugs all day and we landed 5 nice Steelhead and only lost 2 .There was only one other boat in the area where we were fishing and they were using fly’s .The biggest fish was 28 inches the rest were around 22 . The fishing should remain great till the next storm moves in. Some of the north coast rivers are now open to fishing .The Smith , Eel, South fork of the Eel and the Van Duzen are open. The number to call is 707 442 4502 for the latest updates .Most of the coast river estuaries stay open check your F&G book for the rivers you are going to fish. The salmon should be on the move with this first storm as all the rivers are running high. Thanks Tim King

Date: Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 20:55:53
Current Report:

The rain is still coming down we fished in a down pour most of the day .We landed 4 steelhead today the biggest was about 7 lbs. We caught them all on plugs. The weather is supposed to clear up tomorrow and be partly cloudy. This rain will really get the fish in the lower river to move up. It is usually a tough bite on a rising river when the river stabilizes things should improve. The smith river came up quite a bit the salmon should be on the move out of the estuary. The Klamath was up too and the steelhead fishing should be great when the flows top out .The mad was up to around 400 cfs no reports of steelhead yet but there are salmon in the river. The eel came up some but more water is needed to get things going over there .The low flow closures are still in effect so be sure and call before heading out . Thanks Tim King

The rains have finally arrived and we are seeing some runoff into the rivers .The Trinity was up to around 500 cfs in the Douglas City area and over 2000 in Hoopa. The river is fishable above Junction City. The Mad is running around 300cfs at the mouth. The estuary is loaded with salmon and we have heard of a few being caught. The Eel is up and running but is still closed at this time .Your best bet for fishing is the Trinity for steelhead or the Smith for salmon .Ill report on the action on the Trinity tomorrow Thanks Tim King

Date: Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 08:39:30
Current Report:

The Steelhead fishing is pretty good the river is low and clear and the water temperature has been around 44 degrees. We have been fishing a lot of different areas and have been catching fish in all of them they are even reporting some fish all the way up by the hatchery .The fish seem to be a little bigger this year running 6 to 10 lbs there are a few Coho salmon in the river too these must all be released .There still is know rain in sight it will break wide open as soon as the creeks get enough water to start some fresh runoff .We have been catching them on small wiggle warts glow bugs the fly fisherman are having some good success with egg imitations or golden stones or black rubber legs We will start fishing some of the other north coast rivers for steelhead and salmon as soon as the low flow closers are lifted . Thanks Tim King

Date: Friday, October 25, 2002 at 22:58:12
Current Report:

The steelhead fishing is picking up steam in the Junction City area. Salmon fishing is pretty slow. There are a few fish being caught in the upper river around Lewiston There are lots of Steelies down in the Willow Creek area and by Del Loma. We really need some rain to help them move up river. There are a few steelhead in the upper portions of the river but most of them are concentrated down below Del Loma .We will be fishing for salmon the rest of this week then switching over to steelhead we will probably be fishing down in Hoopa on the Indian reservation the steelhead are waiting for some rain before moving up river. Current Report:

We ran into a ton of fresh salmon today it was wide open all day. We were fishing in the Lewiston area the fish started biting at around 7 am and we had landed 6 by 7:30 we were able to bring home fresh limits for every one. The bite continued all day it was fantastic we didn’t catch any steelhead as we stayed on the salmon all day .I don’t know how long it will continue to be this good let’s hope for a while. They have dropped the flows to 300 cfs the river is really low and the hatchery has released the smolts into the river roe is not a good bet they will pick you to death. We saw a lot of dead smolts floating in the river we will try and find out why this is happening. We really need some rain for the steelhead fishing to pick up then it should break wide open .Call if you need more information .Thanks Tim King

Date: Sunday, October 13, 2002 at 19:39:02
Current Report:

The salmon fishing is cruising along we have been landing around 5 fish per trip with lots of hook ups. We had one bad day down in Junction City this week with only one fish boated. We have moved up to the Lewiston area with much better results the biggest fish this week was 28lbs.The steelhead action is picking up with a few fish landed this week we really need some rain to get things really moving. They will be dropping the flows to 300cfs on October 15 it should not have much effect on the fishing .In fact in the low flows the steelhead are a little easer to find in the slots. The weather has been in the low 30 in the morning and up to 70 during the day. The fishing on the Klamath is going good above the I 5 bridge with lots of fish being caught on roe and plugs the steelhead action is good to. I will start my Eel river reports with they open it from the low flow closer. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The Trinity River salmon derby was a huge success with over 50 anglers trying to win a pound of gold from the river. There were lots of Fish caught from the boats and the bank anglers faired well also. You had to have over 50lbs a day to be in the running for the gold. The fishing remains fantastic for fall run salmon there are some big fish being caught up to about 30 lbs. We have been landing around 10 fish per trip out of 15 or so hookups. The Steelhead are starting to show as we are catching 1 or 2 per trip as we fish for salmon. We got word from the department of Fish and Game that they might close the river to salmon fishing to help increase the numbers of fall fish at the hatchery they have already have there quota of Springer’s .They will decide in the next week or two. We will soon be fishing for steelhead only as the salmon season closes. The fishing on the Klamath has moved in to the upper river above Happy Camp up to the dam there are lots of salmon still to be caught in the upper sections. There are lots of steelhead every where in the Klamath. Now is the time to get out before the rain hits see you out there. Tim King

The fishing on The Trinity is doing ok there are lots of fish being caught, but most of them are dark we hooked 12 fish today with 3 of them bright fish to 28 lbs we released the rest .The fishing on the Klamath is doing good the water has reached the coast and is bringing up more fish plus the weather has been cooling off at night witch is lowering the water temperature. Current Report:

The fish kill on the Klamath is having a temporary affect on the Trinity as some of the fish killed were headed our way. The Trinity river hatchery is reporting good numbers of fish at this time and they expect to meet or exceed there quota. The water resources have released more water down the Klamath this will bring up more of the fall fish that are in the estuary to start there runs up the Trinity and the Klamath. We expect the fishing to be back in full swing by the end of this week. There are lots of older salmon spawning in the river please do not try and catch these we need them for the future runs. The steelhead action has been ok we have been catching a few per trip on hotshots and roe this action will pick up soon. Hope to see you out fishing Thanks. Tim King

Current Report:

Hello fisherman the fishing is really starting to pick up on the Trinity and Klamath rivers. The fall fish are coming up the Klamath and into the lower Trinity .There are a mixture of bright fish and some old springers hanging out in most of the deeper pools. The Steelhead fishing on the Klamath is red hot. There are some Steelhead being caught on the lower Trinity around Hoopa and Willow Creek . The weather has really cooled off which has lowered the water temperature in the Trinity about 5 degrees in Hoopa hope it stays cool this really helps the fish. We have been landing 6 to 7 fish per trip with most clients going home with limits. The largest this week was 27 lbs caught by Duane and Susan Garmin from Pleasanton. Now is the time to head to one of these great rivers good luck Tim King

The fishing on the Trinity remains very good in the areas above Junction City. We have been fishing from Willow Creek to Lewiston .The salmon action is all in the upper river with most anglers scoring limits up to 30 lbs. The Willow Creek area is kicking out some steelhead most are half pounders with a few adults mixed in the largest one this week was about 8 lbs. The fall fish are on their way up Trinity and will continue through October. The Klamath is full of fall fish boats and bankies are landing limits with lots of steelhead mixed in .They will be raising the water level on the Klamath soon which will really trigger the fish to head up good luck . Current Report:

The fishing continues to be really good on the Trinity River. There are lots of fish from Junction City to Lewiston some of the fish that have been in the system since June are getting really dark .There are fresh fish moving in daily but not in huge numbers. There was a 30 pounder caught this week the first of the fall run most fish are around 10 to 20 lbs. Most boats have been averaging around 5 to 7 fish a day .The fall run is just trying to get started with fish pushing into the estuary on high tides then returning to the ocean on the Klamath a few fish are starting to make there way up river to Blakes . They will raise the water level on the Klamath September 1 that will help trigger the army of fish to head up to do there thing. Tim King

Current Report:

The fishing is getting better on the Trinity. There are lots of fish from Junction City to Lewiston. We have been putting in the boat 5 to 6 fish per trip the fish have been averaging around 12 to 14 lbs with a few bigger ones mixed in. The fish and game have a fish counting station in the Junction City area so far this year there have been around 750 fish going into the upper river this past week they have been counting around 20 fish a day moving upriver. They don?t count fish on the weekends I think this is when most of the fish move up as there is no obstruction in the river with a person sitting there counting fish so lets just say there is a lot of fish in the upper Trinity river. Now is a great time to fish the weather is warm and that makes for a great day on the river come on up and enjoy it. Thanks Tim King

Current Report:

The fish have settled in and are resting in the larger holes on the upper Trinity. There are a few pods of fresh fish moving in but not in the numbers as the passed few weeks. The fish that are moving in are larger in size and are more aggressive to bite. We still are catching good numbers of fish from Junction City to Lewiston. The water flow is 450 cfs the temp. has been around 52 to 56 degrees. Now is a great time to catch these spring run fish. The Klamath is waiting for more fish to move in. The mouth is in great shape for the fish to have easy access to the estuary the fishing should pick up soon. I made a trip over to the Eel this week to check out some access problems that needed to be addressed the should all be taken care of by steelhead season call if you need more up to date info.Tim King

Current Report:

The fishing on the Trinity River continues to be good. The fish are all through the whole river system. Most boats are seeing 3 to 4 fish per trip to the boat these fish are real line burners I have heard of more than one person being spooled. The fish have been getting larger with weights up to 25 lbs. I would like to especially thank Tom and Kathrine from the southern part of our state. They did an excellent job with Kathrine landing her first KWICKFISH caught salmon@ 15 lbs. The fishing on the Klamath has slowed way down as boats wait for the next push of fish to come in. I still have a few openings for the fall run. See you on the river Tim King

Current Report:

The Trinity River has really taken shape the flows are at 450 cfs and will remain there through October. The fishing has been pretty good we have been landing to the boat 2 to 4 fish per trip. The fish are running between 8 and 15 lbs and are bright fresh from the ocean. These first fish are some of the hardest fighting fish you will ever see . The numbers in the boat will improve in as more fish move in to the system. The Klamath is dropping as the flows come down witch makes the water temp rise the fish will be looking for cooler water up the Trinity. There are still good numbers of fish being caught around Klamath Glen. Hope to see you on the river with a fish on. Tim King

WOW what a difference a few days make! The fish are all over the river from Weitchpec to Lewiston. All are bright chromers fresh from the ocean. They are averaging about 8 to 12 lbs. Most of the drift boats on the river were hooking fish. We fished the Steiner flat area and hooked 3 on Friday and 2 on Saturday. We saw a lot of people fishing from the bank hooking fish. The flows are down to about 750 cfs the river is in great shape. The Klamath is still fishing really good as lots of fish are pushing through to get up to the Trinity. Hope to see you on the river Tim King

We have been fishing around Willow creek and the Hoopa valley the fish are ranging in size from 8 to 15 pounds. These fish are chrome bright and fight really hard. The Klamath River is fishing really good the spring run is really starting to take off. Tight lines. Tim King
